Oligarchy: Thoughts and lyrics

Nothing too profound here, I was reading 1 Samuel 8 and noticed that no matter how much Samuel warned the Israelites, they still demanded a king.  I gave Carl just a few bits and pieces and he really riffed on this one. Funny how humans always demand a king and are willing to give up freedom to achieve that goal. -MK

This was one of the several tunes Mike and I wrote just sitting and bouncing ideas off of each other in the studio. -CG

We want a king and we want him now
Like other nations we want to bow
We want a king and we want him now
We want a king

We want a king and we want him now
Give to him bars so he’ll build my cage
Freedom asks too much thought and sweat
Archaic thoughts from a dying age

We want a king and we want him now
Give him my land so he’ll spread his light
Visionary and a pleb to boot
A giant who’ll give us what is right

We want a king and we want him now
A judge who’ll force us to atone
Godly freedom we reject
Sacrificing sons on the altar of war

Stack the bodies up, they’re only little people
Filet Mignon on a fork and chain
Gesturing “thank yous” rattling cuffs
Grateful that you give me my full hour of sun
A condescending smile with the locking latch

If I give you what you want
If I give you what you want
Trust me, you’ll
Curse me, you’ll
Burst at the crown around your throat

If I give you what you want
If I give you what you want
Harken, he’ll
Darken the
Garden I gave you in love

We want a king and we want him now
Give him the keys to the door of my home
Snug in the trust that he’ll keep us safe
Subjects subdued by surrender
